For celiacs, avoiding gluten isn't a lifestyle choice. It's a necessity.
I was diagnosed with celiac disease over a decade ago, and while I am grateful for the influx of gluten-free options, it's been a lot harder to be taken seriously. I am happy that some people find health benefits when they go gluten free, but restaurants have been more skeptical of my restrictions following widespread gluten free eating.
I've heard one too many diners claim to be celiac and then order that brownie, "just because." This tote features the sentence I use when I'm at restaurants: "I'm not being trendy; I have the disease."
The print is designed by me and hand-drawn by artist Ella Frances Sanders, who also drew the food maps in this shop.
