Description

A large Chinese Qing Dynasty period elm wood opium bed coffee table from the 19th century, with hand-woven rattan top and original lacquer. Created in China during the Qing Dynasty period in the 19th century, this elmwood opium bed will make for an excellent coffee table for today's use. The history of opium beds started some 300 years ago and is rooted in the trade relations between England and China. Opium dens in the 19th century catered to all layers of society, but differed in furnishings and attendants. Rich customers would lay on a bed and rest their head on opium pillows made either of wood, leather or porcelain. After a little while, the pillow felt like a cloud.

Our bed showcases a rectangular top with hand-woven rattan inset, sitting above a waisted apron. Four straight legs with carved extremities, are connected to one another through a stretcher on two sides. The table boasts its original finish with nice distressing revealing its age. With its nice proportions and weathered appearance, this Chinese Qing Dynasty period opium bed coffee table from the 19th century will make for a great addition to any living room or covered patio.
